Curtis Turner was NASCAR’s first wild man. Turner was born in Floyd County
Virginia in 1924 and died in a plane crash in 1970. His antics on and
off the track are legendary. Curtis made millions in the timber business
and racing was more of a hobby. During his racing career, Turner won
360 races in several different racing series. In 1956 he won 22 NASCAR
convertible races and the Southern 500 in a 1956 Ford. Gofer Racing
